10435 US Hwy 64E, Staley NC ( Get directions → )
IN EARLY 1800, Marleys Mill was a stagecoach way station between Fayetteville and Salisbury, welcoming travelers to rest themselves and their horses. In its heydey, there was grist mill, local supply store, sawmill and post office with folks coming and going from all walks of life. Since 1988, Greg Talbott and family restored the residence to its 1850 line and following his passion, brought log structures from 4 counties to the site for restoration. Over a dozen studio/workshops are used for arts and crafts including weaving, painting, blacksmithing, fiber dying, pottery, carpentry, writing, meditating. In beautiful condition, this historic place is ready for its next 100 years.
The original part of the Marley house is a log cabin built around 1816 for a miller and his new wife. Thomas Marley inherited his father's grist mill, the dam for which can be found in the woods east of the house and is listed as far back as 1790 in the North Carolina tax rolls. |
The house was renovated and expanded around 1850 with lumber sawed from Marley's Mill. It was renovated again around 1910 and again in the late 1980's. |
