Gary Phillips was born in the foothills of North Carolina, where red clay and black dirt merge into an area most people think of as redneck country. His father was a mill hand for 45 years. His mother is from the NC mountains.
Gary is a lay preacher, an auctioneer, a writer and a former Chatham County commissioner. He studied anthropology in college to participate more fully in what Ivan Ilich calls "the 500-year war against subsistence." He says he's on the side of subsistence.
Gary has been in real estate for over two decades, founding Weaver Street in 1982. Gary says, "My mission is to do what the land tells me to, protect it in any way I can, and serve the people who give me their trust." He works mostly with large tracts of undeveloped land and farms. His tools of choice are conservation easements, walking land in any weather and generosity of heart. Weaver Street Realty is a haven for Gary, a place where he can do good work and be with people he trusts and admires.
